How Does a Teeth Whitening Treatment Work?
Considerations in Care
At Horizon Dental Designs, we combine the art and science of dentistry to craft beautiful, healthy smiles. We recognize the importance of your investment and are dedicated to offering treatments that support optimal oral health while achieving your smile goals. Our office provides a variety of advanced cosmetic dental services, and our team is here to help you select the best option tailored to your unique needs.
While teeth whitening can deliver excellent results, it's essential to understand that not all stains or discoloration respond the same way to this treatment. Teeth whitening targets only natural teeth and will not change the color of dental fillings, crowns, or bridges. People with yellow-toned teeth typically experience the most noticeable improvements, while those with brown or grayish tones may need more intensive whitening treatments or alternative cosmetic options. It's also important to note that teeth whitening may not be suitable for individuals with sensitive teeth, worn enamel, or advanced gum disease.
You can rely on our team to thoroughly evaluate your smile and provide professional advice on whether teeth whitening is the best choice for you. If it's not, we will suggest other cosmetic treatments that are healthier and more effective.
What to Expect and How to Maintain Results
- Be cautious with your diet, especially during the first 48 hours after an in-office treatment. Your teeth's protective layer takes a couple of days to restore, so avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. This includes coffee, red wine, dark sodas, teas, berries, grapes, chocolate, and other highly pigmented foods.
- Avoid smoking, as it can stain and yellow your teeth. Refrain from smoking for at least the first couple of days after whitening. Quitting or reducing smoking will not only improve the appearance of your smile but also benefit your overall health and well-being.
- It's normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days following the procedure. This discomfort typically fades over time, but you can take over-the-counter pain relievers and use toothpaste for sensitive teeth to help ease the sensitivity.
- Results may vary for each patient. Factors such as the natural shade of your teeth, diet, and oral habits can influence both immediate and long-term results. Also, teeth whitening does not affect the color of existing fillings, crowns, bridgework, or dental bonding. If this concerns you, we can discuss replacing any restorations.
- To maintain your results, follow proper oral hygiene practices and regular dental care. We can also offer a take-home whitening system for periodic touch-ups if necessary.
